2face Idibia led protest now scheduled for Feb. 6

The planned Nationwide protest scheduled for February 5, has now been moved to February 6, 2017. The reason for the 24-hour shift is for the protest to co-incide with the date President Buhari will resume work.

Buhari is currently on a 10-day medical vacation in the United Kingdom and he's expected back the country on Monday February 6, 2017.

US tech firms to challenge Trump travel ban

A broad coalition of US technology firms has begun planning a joint legal strategy challenging President Donald Trump’s executive order barring refugees and many Muslims from American soil, sources say.
More than 20 firms from the sector were expected to attend a meeting to discuss legal options on the ban, which was expected to have a large impact on Silicon Valley and other tech firms which employ thousands of immigrants.
“It’s still very early, but the strategy would probably be similar to the San Bernardino iPhone briefs,” said one tech sector employee familiar with talks on condition of anonymity.
The source was referring to the coalition which fought a US government order which would have forced Apple to weaken iPhone security to inspect a handset used by one of the shooters in a deadly attack in Southern California in December 2015.
Participating in the talks were Google parent Alphabet, Netflix, Airbnb and Twitter, the source indicated.
Other firms invited or participating include Adobe Systems, Dropbox, Etsy, Mozilla, Pinterest, Reddit, Salesforce, Yelp, SpaceX and Zynga, according to the source.
The talks included “several” member companies of a Washington-based technology policy association, according to a separate source.
Trump’s order has provoked widespread outrage, including from technology firms, with executives from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple and Netflix expressing concerns over the ban.
The executive order, signed Friday, suspends the arrival of refugees for at least 120 days, and for the next three months bars visas for travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Fuel thief dies inside petrol tanker

The corpse of two men, a suspected fuel thief and another unidentified man who fell into a deep well, have been recovered.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, LSFS, Rasak Fadipe, disclosed on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, that the two bodies were recovered from a petrol tanker and a deep well on Monday, January 30, 2017, Daily Post reports.

Fadipe said that the man who attempted to steal fuel from a parked tanker was reportedly suffocated to death by the fuel fumes.

The directors told reporters, “The tanker was parked opposite Morogbo Police Station, along the Badagry Expressway. The dead man was removed at about 5 pm on Monday and was handed over to Morogbo policemen.”

Fadipe added that the body of another yet-to-be identified man who fell into a deep well of about 150 feet on Monday night was also recovered by the service.

“The well is located at a virgin land, no one knows what the victim was looking for before falling into the well.”

The LSFS boss said that the sad incident took place at Iju Isahga area of the state, noting that it had been difficult for the service to retrieve the corpse of the deceased.

‘My father is an APC leader,’ - Apostle Suleman

The leader of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman has said that his father is a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Suleman also said that he has no business with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is not interested in politics.
The controversial cleric made the comments following an attempted arrest by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ekiti.
“I am speaking to clear the air, because number one, people who are going about saying things about me, do not know me,” he said while addressing members of his church.
“They owe me an apology for all of those statements. They are making the issue political, as if I am with PDP. Let me say this thing that Nigerians do not even know. Let me shock them. My father is a leader of APC in Auchi.
“If I were to be political, don’t I know who to follow? But I am not interested in politics.
“I need to speak about this because of my friends and most of our northern pastors who have Fulani members. Many of them have been so concerned. They said: ‘Daddy, we know you love us.’… My driver in Lagos is a Muslim. He has been driving me for nine years and I have bought him two cars. If I am not tolerant, a Muslim won’t drive me.
“I come from a Muslim family. Some of my family members are Christians, some are still Muslims… I have decided to ignore them because your viewpoint is what determines your point of view. What gets your intention should not get your attention. They don’t know me,” he added.
Suleman has been the centre of controversy since he was filmed urging members of his church to kill Fulani herdsmen.

Protest: Obasanjo gave us grace of 20yrs not to pay for electricity – P/Harcourt community

Some angry youths in Oyibo Local Government Council have said that the government of Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo gave their community a 20 years grace not to pay for electricity.

The youths in the late hours of Monday shutdown a power station belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), leading to electricity blackout in Port Harcourt and environs.

They were protesting alleged inability of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to provide them with steady electricity and TCN’s refusal to employ youths from the host communities.

The youths, in their numbers, forced the TCN staff to leave their office premises and barricaded the power station in Afam, Oyibo Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers. Chisom Ngbali, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Oyibo Local Government Council, who led the protest, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

He said that the youth took the action after the host communities were allegedly disconnected from the power grid following their failure to pay electricity bills.

“We went there (power station) and left the premises immediately after giving them instructions that if they don’t restore electricity to us; there won’t be electricity anywhere. “PHED says they will not give host communities electricity until they make payment for electricity used which is not part of the agreement we have with the Federal Government.

“Host communities have been thrown into darkness for five days and counting and electricity supply is the only thing that we are benefiting from TCN’s presence in our communities. “We had earlier given them the condition that if we must pay for electricity; TCN should employ our people and give us contracts as stated in the local content law,’’ he said.

Ngbali claimed that host communities had an agreement with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 2006; and which granted host communities 20 years window of non-payment for electricity. He said the 20 years period would expire in 2026, adding that the disconnection of electric supply to the area was illegal. Ngbali claimed that no indigene of the communities was under the employ of TCN in spite of the company operating in the area for many years. “We cannot be in the midst of plenty and yet nothing is coming to our people.

This is our land, and all the adverse effect on the environment is on us,’’ he said. Mr John Onyi, the spokesman for PHED said that the protesters’ action disrupted power supply to Port Harcourt and environs. He said that PHED depended on transmission from TCN to enable it to distribute electricity to customers in the state. Onyi condemned the protest and challenged host communities to produce the written agreement it had with the Federal Government which absolved them from paying for electricity.

“We recall that on two different occasions in 2016, youths from Oyibo LGA carried out similar action, and to which, if unabated will continue to throw Port Harcourt city into unnecessary darkness. “PHED condemns the actions of the youth and call on law enforcement agencies and Rivers Government to intervene and put a final stop to this frequent disruption of electricity distribution to customers,’’ he said.

Donald Trump and the Muslim world, by Reuben Abati

I am not a fan of Donald Trump, the incumbent President of the United States. I didn’t stand with him. I stood with her – Hillary Clinton – in the last US Presidential election. No other election in recent American history has been more international in terms of interest and emotional involvement. Trump’s election even divided the Nigerian middle class. Majority of Christians in Nigeria stood with Donald Trump. They liked his anti-Muslim rhetoric, and in a country where religion is such a volatile subject and the Christian community feels as if it is under siege from radical Islamic extremism, it was easy for a category of Nigerians to see Trump’s politics being in sync with their own fears and expectations.
Pro-secessionist, Biafran and Christian protesters in the South East also supported Trump. On his Inauguration Day, they organized a rally, some of them were killed, in the process, by Nigerian security agents. It is always so easy to read American politics into every other politics globally because of America’s status as a superior power and the global dominance of its culture. Many Nigerians who opposed Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party also did so, for example, for partisan reasons, because they felt the Democratic administration of President Barrack Obama was responsible in many ways for the outcome of the 2015 Presidential election in Nigeria. They wanted a pound of flesh – they wanted the Democrats out of the White House, the same way the PDP exited Aso Villa. The funny thing is that Nigerians who do not hold American citizenship, were not in a position to vote in the US election, but this didn’t deter us from weeping more than the Americans. In my case, I opposed Trump because I consider him a vile, navel-gazing, crude, child-like nativist, whose Presidency could pose a threat to the free world.
I have been proven right. The United States is in trouble because of Donald Trump. In less than two weeks in office, President Trump has signed executive orders, which amount to an assault on the liberal international order. America is great because it became the dreamland and the symbol of freedom, prosperity and fulfillment for persons and families across the world. It is great because it became the melting pot for global genius, the preferred destination for generations of talented persons in all fields of human endeavour. America is great because its diversity and multiculturalism became pillars of its exceptionalism.
Donald Trump, on twitter where he spends his waking hours, and on the podium, where he rants, says his ambition is to “Make America Great Again” (#MAGA), but it is beginning to look as if Trump will end up making America small. The Executive Orders which he has signed so far, are intended to upturn America’s foreign policy in the last 50 years, isolate the country from the rest of the world and turn it into an island. America appears destined to become a pariah state for the next four years. With Trump, America now sees the rest of the world as an ocean of enemies, with this persecution complex dressed up as national interest.
The most pernicious of the Executive Orders is Trump’s suspension of the US refugee programme for four months and the entry ban for 90 days imposed on nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Is the action legal? Section 212(f) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) (1952) empowers the President to restrict immigration access to the United States: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants and non-immigrants or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.” The sentiment behind this legal provision is protectionism, which is ironic in a country of immigrants.
This is Donald Trump keeping his campaign promise to protect America for Americans and review immigration policies. Is this new? No. Over the years, America has always tried to control the influx of immigrants. This was the case even under President Barack Obama. Trump reminds us of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act which turned back the Chinese, and a similar law in 1924, which targeted Asian and African immigrants, both of which were corrected by the Immigration Act of 1965, which forbids discrimination on the basis of national origin, ancestry and race. The only problem is that Trump’s approach is crazy, a case of policy mixed with bigotry and narcissism, and an unconstitutional gambit which violates the First Amendment, hidden under the banner of “protecting the nation from foreign terrorist entry.” Given the contradictions between the 1952 and 1965 Acts and the First Amendment, Trump’s actions are perhaps better tested in the court of law.
He wants to build a wall at the Mexican border. This has already caused a rift with Mexico. He is also holding radical Islam responsible for security breaches in the United States, and this is certainly because foreign-born Muslims have been responsible for many acts of terror in the US: the 9/11, the Boston bombing, the Nigerian underwear bomber; across Europe, radical Islamic extremism has also proven to be a problem. Trump’s solution is to demonize Muslim-majority countries and arrive at the simple solution that the best way to protect America is to shut out the Muslims. He insists that “This is not about religion – this is about terror and keeping our country safe. There are 40 different countries worldwide that are majority Muslim that are not affected by this order.” I don’t believe him.
The chosen seven countries that have been shut out have not in any way been responsible for most of the acts of terror in the US in recent times. Trump leaves out Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and other Muslim-majority countries, but the kind of chaos that has been generated makes every Muslim going to the United States vulnerable. You don’t have to be from the seven targeted countries, once you bear a Muslim name, you could be subjected to greater scrutiny by Customs and Border Protection Officers. Some of the people who have been harassed at the borders since last Friday when the Executive Order was passed are American citizens with dual nationality.
While Donald Trump is proposing greater vetting and scrutiny of the influx of Muslims, and refugees, he is nevertheless willing to allow more Christians into the United States. This is the message that comes across: Christians are welcome. Muslims should be carefully scrutinized before they are allowed in. In other words, Christians are better than Muslims. This may sound like an over-simplification, but that is just how it is. President Trump is likely to make the United States more unpopular in the Muslim world, damage established friendships and promote a culture of hate that has proven a threat to American foreign relations in parts of the world.
American liberals are justifiably upset and angry. President Trump’s policy moves and rhetoric depart from the America they have known for the past 50 years. But right now, America is so divided, nobody can comfortably sit on the fence, and that is why public opinion is so viciously divided too. Trump addresses the fears of those Americans who, like him, don’t want more immigrants and asylum seekers. This is the ultimate rise of American xenophobia and an attempt to turn that country into “a camp of saints.” But there are limits to nativism as seen in Jean Raspail’s novel, The Camp of the Saints (1973) and The Slums of Aspen: Immigrants vs. The Environment (2011) by Lisa Park and David Pellow.
But no matter the tone of global outrage, Donald Trump obviously doesn’t give a damn. Mexico has cancelled a meeting with Trump, a protest calling for signatures to prevent his proposed state visit to the UK has attracted over a million signatures, Iran is threatening reciprocal action, the entire Muslim world is outraged and inside America, California is threatening to secede because of Trump! And Trump? He wants to be President of the United States, not President of the world. He wants to serve the American people who voted him into power, not some immigrants coming from the slums of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Across the world, there are millions who look up to the United States as the land of freedom. Trump is saying America is no longer ready to be the world’s Atlas nation. It is not just immigration that will be affected: trade, aid, military relations as well. This has created a regime of fear among many who depend on the United States.
There are millions of Africans living in the United States, particularly Nigerians. They don’t all have the papers granting them the right of stay. There are asylum seekers, refugees and many who are still processing their residency papers. An American for Americans only policy is likely to place them at the risk of rejection and eventual deportation. When you talk to some of them, you can actually sense panic, fear, despair. They panic because America has become their adopted home. It is their place of work, their source of hope, and the best place in the world where they are happiest.
They panic because their original homeland offers them little hope. They don’t want to return to a Nigeria where there is no regular power supply, employment opportunities, good roads, communications or transportation system. Living in America confers a special status on them among friends, family members and the community at home. There are others who are already naturalized Americans, and who may have nothing to fear, and there are those Nigerians who have helped to build America with their talents and intellect, and who don’t really care on what side of the bed Donald Trump is likely to wake up tomorrow morning.
Then you have the big crowd of I-must-go-to-America-by-force set of Nigerians who are daily trooping to the American embassy in search of visa. Since the Executive Order by President Trump, that crowd has not been smiling at all. I know many of our compatriots who have suddenly become experts in analyzing American immigration rules. Nigeria is not one of the seven countries on the Trump list and the review and restriction are supposed to last for 120 days, but long-time US visa applicants in Nigeria believe that what a typical American immigration officer has actually been looking for is a President like Trump. An inconsolable applicant tells me he is no longer sure he will ever get a visa to the United States.
I assured him that the world will always need America and America will always need the world. Isolationism discounts the ideal of an interconnected global order. President Donald Trump’s success will be determined in the long run not by the arrows he shoots in the international arena from North Korea, to China, to Mexico and Somalia, but how well he fulfills the promise to make America greater than he met it. If they don’t want you to stay in America, come home, please. Stay at home, e go better… or go to Canada or Taiwan.

FRSC seeks nationwide ban of commercial motorcycle

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has recommended a nationwide ban on commercial motorcycles popularly known as `Okada’ to reduce accidents on our roads.

The recommendation forms part of the October Road Traffic Crash (RTC) Report 2016, submitted by the Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The report made available to the News of Nigeria (NAN) quotes Oyeyemi as saying that commercial motorcyclist, remained a major cause of fatal road traffic accidents across the country, hence the need for state governments to consider banning them from operating.

The RTC statistics for October 2016, shows that 230 cases or 18 per cent of a total of 1,259 vehicles were involved in accidents within the month, majority were commercial motorcycles.

According to the report, motorcycle accidents ranked third after cars which accounted for 457 cases or 36 per cent, followed by minibuses with 243 or 19 per cent of the total. Oyeyemi said, “Following the outcome of the analysis, it could be concluded that motorcycle still constitutes serious menace on the nation’s highways.
“Accordingly, improved results could be achieved in the future, if more state governments could consider placing a ban on the use of motorcycle for commercial purposes. “In view of the above, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation should facilitate and encourage state governments to ban the use of motorcycle for commercial purposes.’’

NAN reports that commercial motorcycle is currently banned from major routes in some cities and towns including Abuja and state capitals across the country. Besides their contributions to road accidents, they have also been linked to the operations of armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals in several parts of the country. In 2014, the National Council on Transport recommended their ban nationwide “to ensure adequate provision of safe and secure means of transportation in the country’’.

Reports say Anambra and Lagos states had for over two years now, banned the use of commercial motorcycle on highways in their territories.

Liverpool owe fans a performance against Chelsea – Klopp

Jurgen Klopp says his Liverpool side owe their supporters a big performance against Chelsea on Tuesday night.
Liverpool welcome Premier League leaders Chelsea to Anfield in desperate need of a win to keep their season alive after three successive home defeats last week.
Klopp wants fans to forget the recent setbacks and create an intimidating atmosphere for Antonio Conte’s side.
“My impression is that the supporters are really still together,” Klopp said. “It was good in and around the stadium on Saturday. The defeat wasn’t about the performance of the crowd.
“We haven’t given the crowd a lot to celebrate over the last few games but now is another chance. It’s important.
“It is a floodlit game at Anfield. It should be an outstanding atmosphere against the strongest side in the Premier League at this moment.
“In this game a lot of things will not work because you cannot come through always against Chelsea, it’s absolutely impossible. Be ready for this frustration and go for the next moment.
“You hear the difference in the stadium when you miss a chance and everyone goes ‘Aaargh, again?’ You can hear it. Or ‘Go Again!’ because now we know how to come through against them. It is exactly the same situation played in a different atmosphere. It would help to be positive.”
Liverpool have only won one game in 2017, and last week crashed out of two cup competitions, while a 10-point gap opened up between them and Chelsea.
However, Klopp says he does not need to “punish” his players, more provide them with an arm around the shoulder.
“I am absolutely not a manager for the public,” he added. “I am not a manager who is interested in what I should say to you and I am not interested in what people think about what I say.
“I am only interested in what my players think after I have spoken to them. Hopefully I speak to my players better than I speak to you.
“I’m not going to punish them in there and then come here and be a positive guy.
“I forget your questions the second after you ask it. I go out and work with the players again and that’s what I’m interested in — nothing else.”
Meanwhile, Klopp does not anticipate the club to be busy on transfer deadline day, insisting that is not his style to do business.
When asked for his thoughts on hype generated by the closing of the transfer window, he replied: “I don’t mind, I think if you ask me a question about it I always answer, [though] probably not a lot of times when I’ve given the answer you want to hear. I’m sorry for this.
“I have no problem. I thought last summer actually these transfers could have been finished earlier but they wait obviously until the last second and then it’s done.
“That’s not my way. You should plan things like this. Obviously they plan, I’m not in the other clubs, I don’t know exactly what they do.
“You can do what you want really and if it’s entertaining, it’s entertaining. I’m not entertained — that should not be a big problem.”

Wrongly jailed for 31 years, man gets N23,000 compensation

An innocent man who spent almost his entire adult life in prison was given just £60 when he was finally released.
Lawrence McKinney, 60, was wrongfully convicted of rape and burglary in 1978 and sentenced to 115 years in prison.
However, DNA evidence examined in 2009 eventually ruled him out as a suspect – meaning that, after spending most of his life behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, he was a free man.
After his release, McKinney was given a paltry $75 – around £60.
He could be eligible for up to $1m in compensation if a parole board hears his exoneration case – but this has been denied twice already.
McKinney, from Memphis in Tennessee, told CBS News: ‘I don’t have no life. All of my life was taken away.’
His lawyer Jack Lowery agrees, and says he deserves some compensation for being denied freedom for most of his life.
‘It is not justice for him not to receive compensation for being wrongfully imprisoned,’ he added.
In September, a parole board voted 7-0 to deny him an exoneration hearing. Now it’s up to Tennessee’s governor, Bill Haslam, to make a final decision.
‘There has been one mistake made that sent him to prison,’ Lowery added. ‘I trust that another is not made that does not allow him exoneration.’

$40m contract scam: Absence of witnesses stalls trial of Jonathan’s cousin

According to Vanguard, the absence of prosecution witnesses, Monday, stalled trial of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola and his wife, Stella.

The duo are answering to a seven-count charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against them before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

They are facing trial over alleged $40million contract scam. At the resumed sitting on the case on Monday, EFCC lawyer, Mr. Tahir Sylvanus, regretted his inability to produce the witnesses, even as he pleaded for the matter to be adjourned till March 13 and 14.

Mr. Tahir told the court that he would be able to assemble his witnesses and conclude his evidence-in-chief within two days and rest his case. The adjournment request was not opposed by counsel to the defendants, Chief Chris Uche, SAN.

In a ruling, trial Justice Nnamdi Dimgba granted the request of the EFCC, even as he sought more cooperation of the parties for speedy determination of the case. It will be recalled that Azibaola was arrested on March 23, 2016, and subsequently arraigned before the high court after he had spent 90 days in EFCC custody.

The anti-graft agency has so far called four witnesses who have all denied knowing the defendants or having anything to do with their company, Oneplus Holdings Nig. Ltd.

One of the witnesses, Mr. Ibrahim Mahe, a retired Permanent Secretary in the former NSA’s office and EFCC’s star witness, told the court on June 28, 2016, that the funds to which the defendants are being prosecuted, was duly approved, adding that only the former NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki, retd, could say otherwise.

In his testimony, a compliance officer with Zenith Bank, Mr. Boladode Faremo, told the court that Azibaola and his wife were “high net worth customers of the bank”.

The witness insisted that the inflow of $40m into account of the defendants was inconsequential considering their worth. He said no query had been issued against the defendants in respect of their transactions with the bank Justice Dimgba had in a ruling on June 8, 2016, granted the defendants who are facing trial alongside their firm, Oneplus Holding Limited, bail to the tune of N1billion.

They were directed to deposit N500million each, as well as produce two sureties in the like sum. Trump to sign executive order reviewing cyber security capabilities

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on cyber security on Tuesday, two sources familiar with the situation said, marking the first action to address what he has called a top priority of his administration.
The order is expected to commission several different reviews of the government’s offensive and defensive cyber capabilities, according to one of the sources and a third briefed on a draft of the order that circulated last week.
The move follows a presidential campaign that was dominated by running storylines related to cyber security, including the hacking and subsequent leaking of Democratic emails as part of what U.S. intelligence agencies determined was a wide-ranging influence operation intended to help Trump win the White House and denigrate his challenger, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
For months Trump refused to accept the conclusions of the agencies that Russia was responsible, before stating at a press conference on January 11 that, “as far as hacking I think it was Russia.”
In his answer, Trump, then the president-elect, pivoted to say that “we also get hacked by other countries, and other people” while vowing to launch a government-wide review of vulnerabilities tocyber attacks.
The order is expected to also initiate a audit of several federal agencies’ cyber capabilities, seek input on how to improve protections for critical infrastructure, and review government efforts to attract and train a technically sophisticated workforce, according to two of the sources briefed on the draft, which was first published by the Washington Post.
The draft order would also seek ways to give the private sector incentives to adopt strong security measures.

Big Brother Naija: Did you know Gifty and Thin Tall Tony are Married?

12 housemates walked in to the Big Brother Naija house on Sunday January 22nd, two came yesterday, and in their introductions, no one said they are married, or mentioned their kids (except Bisola who is a single parent).

Screen shots of Thin Tall Tony and Gifty‘s families’ pages have been circulating and some people find it shady the housemates haven’t mentioned this big part of their lives to their fellow housemates. They also aren’t wearing their wedding rings in the house. However, it’s not a fact they hide details of their “real world” as many family pictures are on their social media pages.

On the other hand, some people feel no one interrogates single people on why they are single, so this should not be a big deal.

Dancer Thin Tall Tony has been married for three years to the supportive Laraba who is in the hospitality industry and they have two adorable kids – Ella and Mason who look just like him.

Gifty is married to a fellow Nollywood actor and producer, David.
She has also been listed as MD of his company Sodafaces Multimedia And Entertainment Company since 2009, and her Facebook states they got married on September 25, 2014.

Who else do you think we will “find out” is married on the show – or will someone actually own up? We shall see!
