Corruption is real agent of mass destruction, by Awwal Hayatu Wakili

Nigeria is the giant of Africa blessed and endowed with abundant human, material and natural resources. A nation with combined strength of smaller nations put together. It is disheartening to note that the giant of Africa is nothing short of a sleeping giant. The state of the nation is close to collapse as a result of a protracted societal illness. Corruption is one of the most heinous problems that has subjected Nigeria to a sorry state; the nation has been raped, brutalized, bastardized and victimized by the dreaded monster. It has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation.

Corruption has taken over the minds of the poor citizens of our great nation, an avenue to get rich quick, it has crippled the nation mentally, socially and physically, it has plunged the nation into backwardness and stagnation, suffocating hardship and abject poverty. The picture of the situation has created few on the sea of affluence and the majority on the island poverty. wanton corruption in high places on the corridor of power as well as embezzlement and self aggrandizement are the order of the day.

Nigeria has become a global compass as one of the most leading corrupt counties in the world. Exaggerations apart, corruption was responsible for some of our societal decay. In fact, there is a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the roofs of our dear nation, at all cost the nation demands a panacea; but how? by who? and when? one of the great privileges of being a Nigerian is the right work towards the solution of the problems that faces us as a people. This however, ought not to be treated lightly.

The problem of our society demands our best efforts in which case, every Nigerian will regard the fight against corruption as a collective responsibility, while we are duty bond to stand against the forces of darkness. Nigerians must be firm and decisive in fighting and the dreaded monster. We must lay down our loyalty in subduing corruption and with unflagging solidarity as we struggle to justify the hope for the future generation.

History will judge us harshly for submitting to the dynamic forces of corruption. We as a nation must know that fame is vapour, popularity is an accident, riches have wings, while those who cheer today may curse tomorrow. The only thing that endures character. We are aware that, where there is no mission and clear vision the people will suffer and wallow in pain and penury. There is a gigantic need to channel our endowed and abundant material and human resources to produce well articulated sustainable integrated development.

We must commend the efforts of the government by setting up the anti -corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and urge the legislative arm of government to enact appropriate laws to bring to a halt the bleeding and leakages of our national treasury. we must as well call the attention of the judiciary to administer judgement with fairness, transparency with out fear or favour.

There is the need for the government and the governed to begin the process of rescuing Nigeria from imminent collapse. This is because the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. Man makes development and happiness his ultimate aim, whereas, money or wealth without wisdom are much more useless. However good a machine is, it is useless if not manned by operator with the right skills. The most fertile soil will remain barren until and unless plough by human labour. A society without meaningful and responsible leadership is nothing short of a fruitless garden. Darkness will certainly fall, but the thicknesses of the darkness of the night can never prevent the day from breaking.
