Rio 2016: AFN ready to send athletes home

After the conclusion of the Rio 2016 Olympic trials, Athletics Federation of Nigeria is prepared to send selected athletes to their respective homes, if the sports ministry fails to release funds for the final preparations for the Games starting in August.

AFN president, Solomon Ogba disclosed in Sapele at the weekend that the federation was still expecting funds from the sports ministry, to complete Nigeria’s training ahead of the Games.

Ogba said:
"I think as a federation we have done everything there is to be done."
“What happens from here I cannot say for now. Even at the moment, we are not sure of sending a team to the world junior championships.”

AFN technical director, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama drove the point home, stating that the athletes will be sent home if nothing was forth coming:
“We have our team already and are supposed to go on the phase two preparations. But if we don’t have money to run our camp then we will send the athletes home.”
